That interpretation became especially influential in later centuries, but it is not what the biblical passage actually says. Genesis chapter 9 describes Noah becoming drunk after drinking wine. Ham sees his father's nakedness and tells his brothers, Shem and Japheth. The brothers respond differently. They approach Noah while deliberately avoiding looking at him and cover him. When Noah later learns what happened, he pronounces a curse—not upon Ham—but upon Canaan.......
