According to the tradition of the Flying Africans, the enslaved people at Igbo Landing rose from the water, grew wings, and flew back across the Atlantic toward Africa. It was more than a supernatural story. It was a symbol. A people who had been told they belonged to someone else imagined themselves escaping completely. Their bodies could be imprisoned. Their names could be changed. Their labor could be stolen. But their spirits could still fly.....
